The meaning of love in Islam

IT is so common that the meaning of love has been restricted in the modern age to the love relationship between a man and a woman. This is a very narrow-minded view of love. Islam has is own comprehensive view of love.

The first type of love that Islam calls for is the Love of Allah, praise be to Him. This love makes you avoid committing sins in order not to make whom you love, Allah, get angry with you. This love also urges you to contemplate all the different aspect of nature that usually lead you to have a deeper faith in the Creator who created all this beauty round us.

The second type of love is the love of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This love also makes you follow the example of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in all his dealings and manners. Also this love is an indication of the love of Allah as stated in the Holy Qur'an, "Say: 'If you do love Allah, Follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins: For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.'" Say: "Obey Allah and His Messenger: But if they turn back, Allah loves not those who reject Faith." (Qur'an, 3:31-32)

The third type of love is human love. It means that the Muslim has to love his other fellow men regardless of their ethnic, linguistic or cultural background. This includes love of neighbors, colleagues, relatives and even strangers. This type of love persuades the Muslim to help anybody whenever he can. There are numerous of Ahadith that exhort Muslims to help anybody who really needs help because such an altruistic act takes the Muslim one step closer to Allah.
The fourth type of love is the love between a man and a woman, but Islam organizes and regulates these lofty feelings within the framework of marriage because Islam views that marital love leads the couple to have a peaceful and happy family life, which is the core of the Muslim society.

In other words, this love is acceptable as long as it is within the framework of marriage and this is encouraged in a number of verses in the Holy Qur'an, "And among His signs is this, that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you may find repose in them, and He has put affection and mercy between you: verily in that are indeed signs for those who reflect: (Qur'an, 30:21)

It is amazing how Islam derives love from other religion. It is quite sad to see how narrow minded people can be when it comes to love. I myself am narrow minded and willing to learn the true meaning of love. Hopefully your post can be a help to me.

The command of Jesus Christ:
1) Love the LORD your God;
2) Love your neighbour as yourself;
3) Love one another;
4) Love your enemy!!!!!!
Jesus Himself demonstrates the greatest Love ever from God to human - died on the cross for sinners, whom are God's ememies.

Islam does not obtain the meaning of Love from other religion. There is only one religion from Allah almighty and that is Islam. Islam was before (since the beginning of this world) prophet Mohammad (sallahu alaihi wasallam) came to this world. Jesus was a prophet (like all other prophets sent by Allah) sent by Allah to explain the true way of living life. Mohammad (sallahu alaihi wasallam) (for whom this World and the universe was created... it is said in Quran that Allah has decorated this,earth, garden just for Mohammad, sallahu alaihi wasallam) was the last messenger to be sent to this world to clear all misconceptions created by peoples that were told about Allah (is one and there is no one equal or greater than Him).

Very few know and practice this kind Love!!! Take it in, meditate and ponder the ancient & timeless definition of true Love.

1 Corinthians Chapter 13,Says:

4 Love is long-suffering and
kind. Love is not jealous, it does
not brag, does not get puffed
up, 5 does not behave indecently,
does not look for its own
interests, does not become provoked.It does not keep account
of the injury. 6 It does not rejoice over unrighteousness, but
rejoices with the truth. 7 It
bears all things, believes all
things, hopes all things, endures
all things.
8 Love never fails.

And 1 John Chapter 4,Says:

7 Beloved ones, let us continue
loving one another, because
love is from God, and everyone
who loves has been born from
God and gains the knowledge of
God. 8 He that does not love
has not come to know God, because
God is love.

@ anonymus: you're right. God is merciful and is merciful to all. God never said that if you dont follow what I said or the prophets said I ll punish you or you ll go to hell. Some people have used god in the name of religion to make laws that suits only their own community. When God himself has said to love everyone, how can he say not to love certain people. And if you do you ll be punished. It's all crap

Assalmualikum,yes Allah(swt)said we must love everyone including strangers.Islam gives us the right answers we are looking for when it comes to love.The love we have for strangers is only for the sake of Allah(swt)Love for parents is to show them our thanks and gratefulness for taking care of us no matter what problem we go through in life however,loving a person emotionally,romantically and physically is very challenging especially when it comes to being faithful to our husbands,wives or lover.It takes committment,honesty,trust,forgiveness,mercy and most of all patience and understanding if we don't have these values towards our partner,then we are only fooling ourselves
